Daybreak, By: Matt Morris Hawkins

May 29, 2024 by Matthew Morris Hawkins

Daybreak, By: Matt Hawkins

Breathing to my coffee
Awakening to my foot tapping
I remember the autumn air
16th notes in Bach after Bartók
The concrete curb beneath my hand
A stranger’s kiss in the dead of the night
My hope securely in my pocket,
Crawling forward on our ride.

Breathing again
Awakening from a dream.
I believed in you and me
and being, again, my friend.
Juliet leaned over, offered her hand.
My darkness must come with us, she said in earnest.

Moving on and singing my song
Do I accept…or burn in lust?

Perhaps there is some dichotomous path
Where sons and daughters laugh
Evermore lifted by the light of your heart
broken by the world
served a bitter taste to start.
I believed in her.

I took her hand, again.
To play in the ancient band.
Finding my breath.
Alive;
on dry land.
