Graveyard On Church Street, By: Allison Walters Luther

October 30, 2023 by Allison Walters Luther

Graveyard On Church Street, By: Allison Walters Luther

Leaving
The warmth of the home
That no longer feels like home
Leaving you with her
To walk on
Sleeping streets

The old church
Dark and closed to salvation-seekers
But with an open gate that
Beckons in darkness
And gets no answer

Besides
Who else would be here,
Alone
With too much pain
And no more faith
In the wee hours
But me
And the ancient, silent graves
Before me

Sentinels leaning,
As if weary at their post
Crying
This person once
lived and was valued!
Even as the carved words are worn away by
Years and storms and tears
The March-chilled stones
Remain
Their people still
Remembered
If one cares enough to look

Why do you not
Care enough to look for me?

No judgement from these sentries,
These long-dead people,
As I howl my anguished love
The midnight sky spinning
Silently above me
Tears eroding
Not stone but my own
Heart

Wondering
Why I am alone
Why you are not
Why my midnight wanderings
Don’t worry you
Or do you not even notice I am
Gone?
