John Keats (1795–1821) was an English Romantic poet from London who, in a writing life of barely six years, produced some of the best-loved poems in the language. His great odes of 1819—“Ode to a Nightingale,” “Ode on a Grecian Urn,” “To Autumn,” “Ode on Melancholy,” and “Ode to Psyche”—together with sonnets such as “Bright Star” and “When I Have Fears” and the ballad “La Belle Dame sans Merci,” turn on beauty, mortality, longing, and the power of the imagination.
