Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) was an English poet and storyteller born in India, whose ballads of soldiers and empire made him one of the most widely read writers of his time. His best-known poems include “If—,” “Gunga Din,” “Mandalay,” “Recessional,” and “The Ballad of East and West,” and in 1907 he became the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
