Walt Whitman Poems

Poetry Catalog Poems archive

Walt Whitman (1819–1892) was an American poet from Long Island and Brooklyn whose long, unrhymed lines changed what poetry could sound like. His life’s work, Leaves of Grass, holds “Song of Myself,” “I Hear America Singing,” “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry,” and “Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking,” along with his Civil War poems and his elegies for Abraham Lincoln, “O Captain! My Captain!” and “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d.”

Read a fuller life sketch on our About Walt Whitman page. This Poetry Catalog archive gathers 200 poems by Whitman now live on the site—listed alphabetically below, with links to each full text. The texts follow the public domain Project Gutenberg edition of the final 1891–92 “deathbed” Leaves of Grass, and new poems are added to this list as they are published.
