When Children Are Learning, By: Thomas Hemminger

When Children Are Learning, By: Thomas Hemminger

Did you know? Did you know?
Did you know that it’s alright to wonder?
Did you know that it’s alright to wonder?
There are all kinds of wonderful things.

-Fred Rogers

My favorite time
to watch children learn
isn’t in the classroom.

It isn’t when they’re seated
in rows of neatly ordered desks,
waiting to follow the next set of instructions.

It isn’t when they’re standing like
little toy soldiers in a single straight line,
waiting to march through the hallways.

It’s when they’re on the playground,
making up their own games with a friend,
or seeing how high they can swing.

It’s when they’re witnessing the clouds
floating in the sky overhead,
or jumping in a rain puddle to measure the splash.

It’s when they’re far away from
so-called order and precision—
when their imaginations run free.
