William Blake (1757–1827) was an English poet, painter, and engraver from London whose short lyrics are among the most quoted in the language. His Songs of Innocence and of Experience—with “The Tyger,” “The Lamb,” “London,” “A Poison Tree,” “The Sick Rose,” and the paired “Chimney Sweeper” and “Holy Thursday” poems—set a child’s wonder against the cruelty of church, state, and city, while “Auguries of Innocence” and “And did those feet in ancient time” turn vision into prophecy.
