Utah, Omaha, Gold,
Juno and Sword.
Armada on the way
A most formidable horde
The time had come
The day was here
Brave young men
More courage than fear
Prayers and seasickness
Inside all those crafts
Deep thoughtful looks
At family photographs
Some would make landing
And many would not
Their mission was clear
They knew why they fought
Crossed that choppy channel
Many miles from their home
These men attacked pure evil
A courage not their own
Several hours before
Paratroopers were dropped
Logistics weren’t perfect
Still wouldn’t be stopped
Hedgehogs, mines, pillboxes
An enemy well dug in
Allies kept pressing forward
To destroy that Nazi sin
Bodies floated on the shore
A sea that had turned red
We owe a debt of gratitude
To all of those who bled
We reflect today and recall
This heroic, amazing feat
A victory for all of us
But it damn sure wasn’t sweet
