Come Closest, By: Hiram Larew

December 8, 2023 by Hiram Larew

Come Closest, By: Hiram Larew

I admit that I like velvet
     the upholstery kind
Yes I enjoy anything tacked down and
     frayed or
     piped in honey-colored wood
Not perfect but inviting

And I also like homesteads
especially if they are rising in the fog
     looking like a distant wish
Because I was surely a front pasture at one time
Yes I must have been a local soul who
     drank from streams long ago

In truth of all the things I like the most
hair looped back is the best of sheens
the kind that’s like a chestnut horse

Or how autumns come to always be
     in tucked blankets

But back on earth…
Of everything I always love
     frost lit windows are closest
     to the twig
